The Mayans prophesied that the world will end in 2012. The idea is so incredible that a majority regard it with disbelief. But Jackson Curtis (John Cusack) has reason to believe.
Jackson is a driver and writer who is divorced. His ex-wife Kate (Amanda Peet) lives with their children and her boyfriend, Gordon (Thomas McCarthy).
As the D-day draws closer, the Mayans in the jungles of Guatemala begin to kill themselves. The Institute of Human Continuity replicates Noah’s Ark on the foothills of the Himalayas. It is designed to survive any catastrophe though who will be the lucky few who’ll survive remains undecided.
As luck would have it Kate’s boyfriend can fly a plane, so Jackson, Amanda, and the kids hop on the plane and as they look down they see Los Angeles plunging into the Pacific……………..
